Board member recognised in national healthcare awards
A member of the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group Board has received national recognition after being shortlisted in the 2026 National B.A.M.E. Health & Care Awards.
Dr Tanvir Alam, Group Non-Executive Director, was shortlisted in the Inclusive Leader of the Year - Strategic/System Impact category, recognising his contribution to advancing inclusion, tackling health inequalities and promoting culturally safe healthcare environments.
It recognised Dr Alam's leadership in driving greater equality and inclusion across health and care. Through a range of national and regional roles, he has championed workforce inclusion, supported healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds and advocated for healthcare systems where staff, learners and patients feel respected, valued and able to thrive.
The nomination follows a year of significant recognition for Dr Alam. He has been named among the EqualityX Global 100 Influential Muslims and recognised as an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champion at the Zenith Global Health Awards.
Alongside his role with the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group, Dr Alam serves as Chair of the Asian Professionals National Alliance (APNA NHS) and was recently appointed Chair of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
Dr Alam said: "I was honoured to be shortlisted alongside so many inspiring individuals from across health and care. This recognition reflects the collective efforts of colleagues, mentors, allies and community partners who share a commitment to creating a more inclusive healthcare system.
"While there is still much more to do, I remain passionate about advancing health equity, supporting inclusive leadership and helping to create cultures where everyone feels they belong and can thrive."
Prof Lesley Dwyer, Group Chief Executive, said: "We are delighted to see Tanvir recognised at a national level. He brings a unique combination of compassion, challenge and insight to our Board, alongside a deep commitment to improving fairness, opportunity and belonging for staff, patients and communities.
"As we work to strengthen our culture across the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group, Tanvir's experience and perspective are invaluable. He is a passionate advocate for creating environments where people feel respected, supported and able to achieve their potential.
"This recognition is richly deserved and reflects the impact he is making both within our Group and across the wider NHS."
Alongside his role with the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group, Dr Alam serves as Chair of the Asian Professionals National Alliance (APNA NHS), Deputy Medical Director at Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board, and Chair of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
